Kudzu is plant native to Japan and China. In 1876 the Japanese |
government brought kudzu to the United States as part of a plant |
show. American gardeners thought is was beautiful and began to |
plant it everywhere. Some gardeners found that animals liked to eat it |
5 |
and told farmers to plant it to feed goats, cows, and horses. In the |
1930s the U.S. government paid people to plant kudzu to protect the |
soil. The government scientists didn’t know that kudzu grows very |
quickly in the warm weather of the Southeastern United States. |
Kudzu now covers 7 million acres of land in American South. It |
10 |
covers anything that is not moving; homes, deserted cars, and |
telephone poles. It takes over whole fields so that nothing else can |
grow. Some forests are dying because kudzu blocks out the light that |
the trees need to live. |
Now the government is trying to kill the kudzu. Scientists tried |
15 |
poisons, but the kudzu did not die. They are thinking about bringing |
some insects from China. These insects like to eat kudzu, but they |
might eat other plants, too. This might cause new problems. |

根據文章的第11行至第12行,“It takes over whole fields so that nothing else can grow.”
take over 佔領、接替(任)、取代 (always)
The rebels took over the Congress Building.
Mr. Trout will take over as Chief Financial Officer.
Trout
Digital TV is gradually taking over from analogue one.
replace v.
Marvin replaced the book in the shelf.
Marvin
Nothing can replace parents' love.
